CAMPBELL CLINIC FOUNDATION PROVIDES FREE FOOT CARE TO HOMELESS COMMUNITY AT 15th ANNUAL ‘OUR HEARTS TO YOUR SOLES’ EVENT
(Memphis, TN) – On Tuesday, November 15, more than 150 of members of the local homeless community received free foot and nail care from Campbell Clinic physicians and Campbell Clinic Foundation volunteers as part of the orthopaedic clinic’s annual participation in ‘Our Hearts to Your Soles’. This year’s event, made possible with generous support from Red Wing Shoes and Quality Control Medical LLC, was held at the Memphis Union Mission’s Opportunity Center, located at 600 Poplar Avenue in Downtown Memphis.
Our Hearts to Your Soles is a nonprofit with the mission to provide those less fortunate with footwear and free foot examinations. The organization was founded in 2004 by then high school student, Matthew Conti, with the help of his father Dr. Stephen Conti, an orthopedic surgeon at Allegheny General Hospital near Pittsburgh. Supporters of the program believe that proper foot health is an essential part of everyday life that should be available to all, as it is important to an overall health maintenance program.
Research shows that that reaching out and intervening on foot and ankle problems of people experiencing homelessness can reduce foot problems, discomfort and pain for people who may not otherwise have access to care.
At this year’s event, foot and ankle physicians from Campbell Clinic provided on-site foot and nail care. Vital support was provided by the Campbell Clinic Foundation and its Clinical Fellows, Orthopaedic Residents, Research staff and employees; Campbell Clinic Physician Assistants and the Campbell Clinic Cast Room Supervisor. Footwear was donated by Red Wing Shoes, and socks, toiletries and snacks were donated by generous Campbell Clinic employees.
Campbell Clinic’s Dr. David Richardson, a foot and ankle specialist, has organized Campbell Clinic’s participation in this effort for many years, with the event being held each November.
